When you’re in the Peruvian rainforest, you’ll find very few people. But that doesn’t mean you’re alone. You’re not. Ever. Maybe those aren’t human eyes that are watching you. Maybe they’re jaguar eyes. Or caiman eyes. Or the eyes of some creature you’ve never even heard of.
Our goal was to find another truly exotic hardwood—something that no other importer could offer. We found it in Peruvian Olive Wood. During our search, we witnessed first-hand how the indigenous people hunted and defended themselves.
For thousands of years, natives of tropical rainforests have used blowguns along with spears and bows and arrows. A skilled hunter can hit a small monkey with a 10-inch dart from 90 feet away. And it all happens silently. Would a rifle work as well? It undoubtedly could kill the monkey. But the blast of the gun would cause all other wildlife to flee. Which makes going after that second, third and fourth monkey a lot more difficult. The lesson. Respect the culture and ways of the people who live there. Sometimes, they know better than we do.
